Aswan – More Than Just a Dam

Most people will be familiar with the Aswan Dam. There are actually two dams but the one the name refers to is usually the larger one of the two.

However Aswan is not just a dam. It is also a city and as you would guess from the fact that it has a dam at all, it lies very close to the River Nile. It is also worth seeing for several good reasons, and it gives you another view of the country that is famous for its long Egyptian history.

This is a city drenched in sun and it is an ideal place to visit if you don’t want much chance of rain while you are there. This is because they only get rain quite literally every few years. Unless you are extremely unlucky and happen to catch a freak thunderstorm, it will be sun cream all the way.

One of the nicest things about this particular city is that you can get around it quite happily on foot. It sounds a strange thing to say about a city, but Aswan is nicely built up and very accessible to pedestrians. It allows you the opportunity to see how life is lived by the locals here.

There is a chance to see one of the local museums as well to learn more about life in this area. The Nubian Museum is generally regarded as one of the best ones Aswan has to offer. Watch out for the opening times as it is not usually open all day. There are many ancient exhibits here that shed light onto how life was lived many centuries ago.

The Ruins of Abu are also well worth seeing while you are in Aswan. The pillars and structures that remain here provide a stark contrast between modern day Aswan and the area as it was many years ago.

As you can see there is no opportunity to get bored in Aswan. It has much to share with you and if you are ready to see it all you will be glad you arrived in the city.
